About

Jomon & Iron

NAWATETSU comes from Jomon, Japan's ancient prehistoric culture, and tetsu, iron. Chino thrived in the Jomon era as a source of obsidian. Here, one unit of a steel-framed garage-house building is entirely yours. Like a whole-house rental, it has its own entrance, with no shared spaces from the front door to the bedroom.

The ground-floor living room is a former garage, its shutter replaced with glass. Exposed steel frame, cross braces and big glass — the building itself recalls mid-century steel-framed homes.

Beyond the big windows, open farmland and the Yatsugatake mountains, with nothing in the way. Work, cook, or do nothing at all. A secret base for grown-ups.
